To develop FakeTV, data was taken using real televisions of different types and makes. TV programs were characterized, analyzing the light output for intensity and color variation. Several computer files of television data were generated. Then, mathematical formulas that behaved just the same way were developed and programmed into FakeTV's computer. Then tested in the field, and verified that the test subjects simply could not tell the difference between FakeTV and the real thing.
