Dust/Particle Collection
The Surround Air "Multi-Tech" XJ-3000C has a HEPA air filter, which removes 99.97% of particles. The HEPA air filter is generally considered the most effective type of filter for removing dust, allergens, and other solid particles. The Oreck Super 8 air purifier uses electrostatically-charged plates to collect dust and other solid particles. HEPA air filters capture a higher percentage of solid particles, and do a better job of preventing captured particles from reintroduced into the air.

Germicidal Protection
The Surround Air "Multi Tech" air purifier has a germicidal ultraviolet light, which offers very strong germicidal protection. UV lamps are unsurpassed in their ability to destroy airborne micro-organisms, such as germs, bacteria and viruses. The Oreck air purifier does not have a technology nearly as effective as the UV lamp found inside the Multi-Tech at destroying micro-organisms.

Odor Reduction
Ozone is perhaps the most effective air purification technology at eliminating odors. The Multi-Tech from Surround Air has a programmable ozone generator to address strong odors. The ozone generator can be turned completely off if ozone is not needed or desired. Both the Multi-Tech and Oreck air purifiers have an activated carbon air filter, which is also effective at trapping odor-causing chemicals and bacteria.

Fan / Air Flow
Both air purifier models use a fan to move the air. The Multi-Tech ionic air purifier uses two fans.

Ionizer
Both the Surround Air "Multi-Tech" and Oreck air purifiers feature an ionizer just inside the air outlet, which circulates air-cleaning negative ions throughout the room. Negative ions cause the precipitation of particles out of the air, and are also able to destroy some airborne micro-organisms.

Cost
The Multi-Tech HEPA & ionic air purifier is much more affordable, starting at $199, and is priced as low as $149 per unit when purchased in quantities of six or more. The Oreck Super Air 8 air purifier retails at $350. The XJ-3000C HEPA & ionic air purifier does have the HEPA/activated carbon air filter combination cartridge that needs to be replaced every one to two years, but it costs just $32 per replacement. The ultraviolet also needs to be replaced every 12-15 months, at just $15 per replacement. However, the UV lamp is an added benefit, and is not required for the other technologies of the Multi-Tech air purifier to function at full strength.

Air Filtration
Both air purifiers have a pre-filter and an activated carbon filter. The Multi-Tech also features a HEPA air filter, which is generally considered the most effective type of filter for capturing particles and bacteria.

Clinical Testing
Multi-Tech Reduced Deadly "Sewer Gas" by 93% - Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), a strong gas created by stagnant sewage, is one of the very worst, and most difficult-to-remove pollutants and odors known to man. An air purifier's ability to remove H2S is a good indication of its ability to remove strong odors and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), such as chemicals from building materials, carpeting & furniture, and toxic mold. In clinical tests, the Multi-Tech air purifier reduced airborne levels of H2S by 93%. 99.5% Removal Rate of Particles in Chamber -
In a recent lab test, the Multi-Tech removed 99.5% of airborne particulate in a 128 cubic foot chamber (including 99% of the smallest range - 0.3 microns and smaller), designed to replicate the conditions in a typical room. This is more impressive than most removal rate percentages you see, since it measures the particles throughout an entire chamber outside the air purifier, and not just at the point where the air enters the air purifier, which is the common way of testing particle reduction.
